Natural & Safe: The Handbook
Family Planning with Sensiplan™

The Natural & Safe companion texts describe Sensiplan, a leading fertility awareness-based method of family planning (“FABM”), sometimes known as natural family planning (“NFP”). Sensiplan was developed in Germany over a period of decades by the Arbeitsgruppe NFP at the international aid agency Malteser International, with support from the German Ministry of Health.

Sensiplan is a sympto-thermal method, meaning it tracks both physical symptoms (“sympto”) and body temperature (“thermo”). Based on these observations, users can understand when a woman is fertile or not fertile, and plan intercourse accordingly to try to become pregnant or avoid pregnancy. Among FABMs, Sensiplan is the method with the greatest number of research studies and highest effectiveness for avoiding pregnancy: pregnancy percents for Sensiplan are 2-3% for typical use and <1% for perfect use (pregnancy percent indicates the percentage of women out of 100 using a method who became pregnant in the first year of use). When used consistently and correctly, Sensiplan is one of the most reliable family planning methods there is – whatever a woman’s situation in life.

Natural & Safe: The Handbook provides a complete description of the Sensiplan method, and is used in conjunction with Natural & Safe: The Workbook as a required resource when learning the Sensiplan method with a certified fertility educator. The Handbook also can be used as a general resource to teach women how to understand, and be in tune with, their bodies. It is recommended for women/couples to work with a certified fertility educator when learning any fertility awareness-based method to try to avoid pregnancy.
